Denver Werstler Memorial Scholarship
Denver (Denny) Werstler(’62)lived almost all his life in Marlboro Township, the son of Gerald and Hazel Werstler (‘39) and brother of Blaine Werstler (‘60) and Karen(Werstler)Robinson(‘69). He graduated from Marlington High School in 1962 (the second graduating class from the newly created Marlington School District.) He was president and co-valedictorian of his class. Other activities included Student Council, National Honor Society, The Scholarship Team, and being a delegate to Buckeye Boys State. Denny went to The University of Mount Union where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. While at Mount Union he was inducted into Blue Key, a senior men’s national honorary. He received his master’s degree in Polymer Science from the University of Akron.
Denny began his career at General Tire Research (eventually known as GenCorp) where he worked as a research scientist for 30 years. He then worked at Goodyear Research for 10 years before fully retiring in 2007. Denny specialized in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Analytic Chemistry. His expertise in that field was well-recognized within the tire and rubber industry and he continued doing consulting work after retirement.
Denny loved sports. He played football, basketball, and baseball at Marlington and was named MVP of the football team his senior year. He was an avid golfer. It was through golf that he met his wife, Joan. Denny and Joan loved spending time with family and friends. He served as an elder and treasurer of his church, North Springfield Presbyterian Church in Akron.
Many winter hours were spent planning and plotting the numerous flower gardens on his property. Denny was happiest when he could spend time working in his 9-acre yard. His collection of daylilies, hostas and other perennials in numerous flower beds was a beautiful sight every summer.
The MAA looks forward to honoring Denny’s life with a scholarship benefitting students with an interest in science or horticulture.
