Ed and Linda Kuvlesky "Blue Collar" Scholarship
The Marlington Alumni Association is pleased to partner with alumni Ed (’81) and Linda(Nobis)(’81) Kuvlesky to establish the Ed and Linda Kuvlesky ‘Blue Collar’ Scholarship. This award will provide support for students pursing additional education in tech, trade, certificate, or two-year programs.
Ed and Linda first met in seventh grade at Sacred Heart of Mary School, then rediscovered each other their senior year at Marlington High School. In 1989 Ed graduated from Youngstown State University (at the top of his class) with a degree in Emergency Medical Technology Paramedic. Linda graduated from Stark Technical Institute in 1983 with a degree in Applied Science in Physical Therapy Assisting Technology. They have been married 38 years, and have four children and five grandchildren.
Before moving to Vero Beach, Florida, their home for the past 32 years, Ed was a Paramedic in Youngstown. Until his retirement, Ed served as a Paramedic for Indian River County, FL, climbing the ranks for thirty years. Linda was a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) at Robinson Memorial Hospital, and continues to work as a PTA in Florida.
The Kuvlesky’s own several businesses and related intellectual property, including Best Choice Properties, Best Choice Commercial Investments, and Integrated Ideas. They also own and franchise Best Choice Window Cleaning, serving clients along the east coast and throughout the United States.
Ed has written and published two Paramedic text books for Pearson Education, one of which is currently in its 11th edition. Both Linda and Ed attribute much of their success to their mid-westwork ethic, an approach that still serves them well.“Marlington gave us a great start!” said Ed, “Though I was definitely not at the top of my class, Linda was!”Kuvlesky acknowledges the impact of Marlington’s educators, many of whom he is still friends with today. He specifically credits John Haupt, “who guided by a paddling or two, Ede Caretta who always had an encouraging word in study hall, and Melvin Snode who recognized my potential as a blue-collar worker.” Many at MHS provided the appropriate “kick in the seat of the pants to get me on the right track before graduation!”
“We have been blessed over the years,” said Ed, “and we want to help other Marlington students who, like us, will succeed when given a nudge in the right direction. See what you can achieve with a good work ethic and a modest amount of training!” said Ed. “Our motto in all of our family businesses is to work hard, play hard, and enjoy life.” And play hard they do, enjoying travel, climbing 14,000-foot mountains, skiing the Rockies, and fly-fishing in Montana. “Furthermore, ”Ed said, “being a paramedic for more than thirty-six years taught me we are not promised tomorrow. So live life to its fullest, and eat dessert first! Life is but a journey and no one gets out alive so have a plan, and know where you are going. (John 3:16)
”The Marlington Alumni Association is grateful for the Kuvlesky’s permanent investment in Marlington students. Ed and Linda look forward to encouraging more Marlington seniors to “dream BIG, work hard, play hard, have faith, stay married, breathe deeply, and enjoy the ride called life
