Walter Family Scholarship
The Walter Family Scholarship Fund was established in 2023by brothers Kent and Carl Walter. With along standing history with Marlington Local Schools, the brothers knew they wanted to create a lasting legacy to benefit the district.
Their father, Floyd Walter was one of several community leaders who in the late 1950s rallied area support and worked with state legislators to join three township schools in to one unified district. He went on to serve as Board President for twenty years. He also played a significant role in locating and negotiating the purchase of the Moulin Avenue property for the high school.
Marlington Local Schools was formed in 1957 with the consolidation of Marlboro, Lexington, and Washington township schools. The new district was named “Marlington” at the suggestion of T.C.Knapp, who, during this period of reorganization, was Superintendent of the Stark County Schools. Syllables from each of the names of the three townships were combined to form the school’s name.
Before the merger, residents of Lexington and Washington Townships paid tuition to attend local high schools. As Marlboro Township already had a high school, with the consolidation in 1961, it became the initial Marlington High School for the newly formed district.
Growth within the Marlington District was strong, so a new building was planned and built at the current site. The initial construction was completed and the new building opened n 1964.Since 1964,further improvements of the district’s facilities have included additions to Marlboro and Washington Elementary Schools in the 1960s and 1970sand the construction of a Middle School in 1970.
Carl Walter (’69) began his career in 1973 with Price Waterhouse after graduating from Kent State University. After almost nine years there, he moved into wealth management, the last 25 years of which were with Chess Financial Corp. a company he founded in 1986. He lives with his wife Jo in South Carolina, where he enjoys golfing, boating and volunteering for various community organizations
