Supporting Our Mission Through Scholarships
Scholarships are the core of your Marlington Alumni Association and we work hard to be good stewards of the gifts you make and transparent in the way we evaluate and award scholarships. So how exactly does the process work?
New scholarships are established by families and individuals just like you. While we have a minimum threshold of $10,000 before scholarships can be awarded from a fund, we are happy to allow you up to three years to reach the minimum endowment balance.
An endowment means those funds cannot be liquidated, but with careful investing and prudent management your scholarship will provide in perpetuity- a legacy for a lifetime. Some of our scholarships were established with well over $10,000 and some, over time, have grown far past their initial investment enabling the MAA to award larger scholarships to more students. Others, more recently established, provide initially smaller awards, but will grow in size and scope with time.
Some MAA scholarships have specific interests while others are based on students’ academic achievements. However, regardless of the size or emphasis of the scholarship, each is designed to honor the donor and affirm a deserving Marlington student. We welcome those families who choose to help evaluate and recommend candidates for their scholarship.
Scholarship applications are accepted online and all names are removed before the scholarship committee, comprised of seven of your peers, makes their initial review. Each committee member provides a composite score which is then averaged and ranked. The committee returns with recommendations, final evaluations are completed and once approved, the student names are revealed to the committee.
Throughout the process the scholarship committee consistently said two things: “We have some pretty amazing students at Marlington!” and “We need more money to help more students!” Your gift to the MAA Scholarship Fund or to any existing scholarship will allow them to continue the good work begun twenty-five years ago.
Gifts to the Marlington Alumni Association can be made in many ways. While direct gifts of cash or checks are most common, Planned Gifts may help you make a meaningful gift while also addressing other financial goals. Gifts of cash, securities or appreciated assets can be given with a simple provision in your will. When listing the people in your life, you may also wish to include the Marlington Alumni Association in your estate planning. For more information contact please contact Bill Liber (330) 454-5390 or Vondea Sheaffer (330) 697-4036.
